A specialist orthodontist prices the case, not the appliance, so the same teeth cost about the same either way. Metal braces
About $6,000 to $9,000 across NZ, $6,500 to $10,000 in Auckland. The cheapest headline number, and the one most often quoted without records, retainers or repairs.
Clear or ceramic braces
About $7,000 to $10,000 across NZ. The same mechanics as metal with tooth-coloured brackets, usually a small premium on the metal price.
Invisalign and clear aligners
About $4,000 for a very minor case up to $14,000 or more for complex treatment, most comprehensive Auckland cases $7,000 to $11,000. Online kits sit below this because nobody is supervising them.

Why a specialist charges the same for both
The appliance is the cheapest part of orthodontic treatment. Four things make up the fee, and they do not change with the brand.
The diagnosis and the plan
Records, x-rays, a 3D scan and a specialist working out how each tooth needs to move. Identical whether the moves are made by brackets or by a series of aligners.
How much has to move
Mild crowding or a small gap sits at the simple end. Bite correction, rotations and jaw relationships sit in comprehensive. The case sets the tier, not the appliance.
The visits
Braces need an adjustment every 6 to 10 weeks. Aligners need fewer, shorter checks but a higher lab bill for the trays. Over 12 to 24 months the two even out.
Retainers and aftercare
Every case ends with retainers and a year of checks, whichever appliance did the work. Included at Milk, and a frequent extra elsewhere.

Where the price really does differ
Four situations where Invisalign and braces are not the same money.
Very minor cosmetic cases
A slightly crooked front tooth or a small gap can be a short aligner course, and some clinics quote that at $4,000 to $6,000. Braces for the same job are rarely quoted lower.
Complex cases
Big bite corrections and extraction cases are more predictable with braces. As aligners they can need several refinements and more months, which costs money at clinics that charge per round.
Wear time
Aligners only work when worn about 22 hours a day. Every week they spend in a pocket is a week added to treatment. At Milk that costs time, not money. Elsewhere it can cost both.
Online aligner kits
Mail-order aligners are the cheapest option on paper because there is no specialist, no records and no supervision. Teeth moved without a bite assessment are the cases we are asked to fix.

Come out for eating, brushing, photos and sport, and most people barely notice them. They work well for milder crowding and spacing in a teenager who will wear them 22 hours a day, and we check that honestly before recommending them.

Why do Invisalign and braces cost the same at Milk?
Because the fee pays for the diagnosis, the plan, the visits and the specialist's time, and those are the same whichever appliance moves the teeth. The aligner lab bill is higher than a set of brackets, but braces need more chair time over the course, so it evens out. We quote the case, then you choose.
When is Invisalign cheaper than braces?

Does Milk use Invisalign?
Not any more. We used Invisalign in the past and now plan clear aligner treatment primarily with Angel Aligners, made from a similar clear material and planned, supervised and adjusted by our specialist orthodontist. The brand is the least important part of the result and it does not change the price.
How much is Invisalign per month in NZ?
On Milk's in-house interest-free plan, clear aligners or braces work out at roughly $60 to $76 a week, about $260 to $330 a month, after a deposit of around $2,200. No finance company, no interest, and the same plan for either appliance.
