why a specialist

What a specialist orthodontist brings

Every orthodontist starts as a dentist, then trains for years more in one thing only: moving teeth and jaws safely and predictably. That focus is what you choose when you see a specialist.

Years of extra training

On top of a dental degree, a specialist completes around three more years of university training devoted entirely to orthodontics.

Orthodontics all day

It is all we do. That focus shows in careful planning, a precise finish, and confidence with more complex cases.

Every appliance, no bias

Because we are independent, we fit the appliance to your result, whether that is braces, clear aligners or plates, rather than to one brand.

Plenty of our patients arrive on referral from their own dentist, and we keep that dentist informed throughout. A specialist opinion sits alongside your family dental care, it does not replace it.

who we treat

Orthodontics for the whole family

Children

A first specialist check from around age seven catches issues early, while a child is still growing. Often we simply watch and guide.

Teenagers

The classic age for braces or clear aligners, timed around the adult teeth and the school years.

Adults

It is never too late. A large share of our patients are adults who decided their smile was worth it.

questions

Common questions

What is the difference between an orthodontist and a dentist?

Every orthodontist first qualifies as a dentist, then completes around three more years of university training focused only on aligning teeth and jaws. A general dentist looks after your overall oral health, while a specialist orthodontist plans and carries out tooth movement every day. Many of our patients come on referral from their own dentist.

Where in Auckland is Milk Orthodontics?

Our established clinic is in Newmarket, on the corner of Nuffield Street and Remuera Road, with free parking nearby and a short walk from Newmarket Station. A second specialist clinic opens in Albany, on the North Shore, in 2026.

Do I need a referral to see an orthodontist?

No. You can book directly with us, no referral needed. If your dentist has referred you, bring any notes or x-rays they gave you and we will take it from there.

Do you treat adults, or only children and teenagers?

We treat all ages. Teeth can be straightened at almost any age, and a good share of our patients are adults. We also see children from around age seven for an early check.

How much do braces cost in Auckland?

Simple and cosmetic treatment starts from around $4,500, and comprehensive treatment from $9,900, always quoted individually after a specialist assessment. You can see the full breakdown on our pricing page.
