Braces at high school: how it actually fits
Braces and the high school years go together for a reason: it is when most teenagers have them, so nobody at school looks twice. What families actually ask us about is the practical side. Exams, the ball, school photos, sport, music, lunch, and how to get to appointments without missing class. Here is how it works at Milk, from a clinic opposite Newmarket station and one on the bus route in Albany.

The school calendar, and where braces fit
Starting
Any term works. Many families book the fitting in the holidays so the first tender week is spent at home, but a start in term is fine too: after the first few days, school carries on as normal.
School photos
Photos are usually early in the year. If braces would be on, that is completely normal in a school photo. If it matters to your teenager, clear braces or Angel Aligners barely show, and we can time a start for just after photo day.
NCEA exams
We keep adjustment visits away from exam weeks, because a freshly tightened wire is not what anyone wants the night before a paper. Aligners are ideal in exam season. Tell us the timetable and we book around it.
The school ball
Tell us the date at the first visit. With 18 months or more we usually aim to finish before it. With less, we plan a clear option for the last stretch or reach a good-looking stage by the night. More in how long teenagers wear braces.
Tips for school with braces
The small things that make a school day easy. Most teens have this sorted within a fortnight.
Appointments without missing much class
Comprehensive treatment means a short review every 6 to 10 weeks for a year or two. Getting there is usually the whole question.
Short and regular
A routine adjustment takes 15 to 20 minutes. It is the travel either side that eats an afternoon, which is why getting there independently changes the picture. We book around school where we can; ask when you book.
Albany: the bus stops outside
The 83, 861 and 917 stop on Munroe Lane itself. Door to door it is about 20 minutes from Pinehurst and Albany Senior High, and about 30 to 35 minutes from Westlake, Rosmini, Kristin, Rangitoto and Long Bay. The Albany page has the list by school.
Newmarket: opposite the station
The Newmarket clinic is directly across from Newmarket Train Station, so for teens at school in the central suburbs it is often one train and a two minute walk. More on Newmarket.
Discreet options for a self-conscious teenager
The number one worry we hear is standing out. These days it is easy to avoid.

If your teenager comes on their own, we send you a summary of what we did and what happens next after every visit. If there is a decision to make, we always talk to you first. The parent never has to sit in the room to stay across the treatment.
Answered honestly
Can my teenager go to appointments on their own from school?
Many do, once treatment is under way and the visits are short reviews. At Albany the 83, 861 and 917 buses stop on Munroe Lane right outside. At Newmarket we are directly opposite the train station. We send you a summary after every visit and speak to you before any decision.
Will braces affect NCEA exams?
Not if the visits are planned. We keep adjustments away from exam weeks so there is no fresh tenderness during a paper, and the everyday feel of braces is something teens stop noticing within a couple of weeks. Aligners are especially easy through exam season.
Should we wait until after the school ball to start?
Usually there is no need. Tell us the date and we plan towards it: finishing before it where the timeline allows, or using clear braces or aligners so nothing shows on the night. Waiting a year for the ball can mean losing growth that would have helped the bite.
Can they still play in the school band with braces?
Yes. Wind and brass players adjust within a week or two, and wax over the front brackets helps in the meantime. Singers are unaffected after the first few days. Nobody needs to drop music for braces.
What if a bracket breaks at school?
It is rarely urgent. Leave it on the wire, cover anything sharp with wax from the pencil case and phone us on (09) 520 1880 after school. We fit repairs in quickly, because a bracket left broken for weeks slows treatment.
Do you have appointments after school?
We book around school where we can, and the short review visits are the easiest to place. Ask when you book and we will find the best fit for your teenager's timetable and travel.
Can they eat school lunches with braces?
Yes, with a few swaps. Sandwiches without hard crusts, wraps, pasta, rice, fruit cut into pieces and yoghurt are all easy. The things to skip are hard, sticky and chewy: whole apples, popcorn, hard lollies, chewing gum and ice.
Will braces show in school photos?
Metal braces will, and that is entirely normal in a school photo. Clear braces are far subtler, and Angel Aligners are near-invisible. If photo day matters, tell us and we can time a start for just after it or choose a discreet option.
