There is no single right age for a straighter smile
People often think orthodontics belongs to the teenage years, and for many families that is when it happens. The truth is a little kinder than that. A seven year old, a fifteen year old and a fifty year old can all be excellent candidates, because what matters is the health of the teeth and gums and the goal you have in mind, not the number on a birthday card.
Every treatment plan here is designed and delivered by a specialist orthodontist, so whatever stage of life you are at, you are in the right hands. Below you will find where children, teenagers and adults tend to fit, along with clear next steps for each.
For children
We suggest a first check from around age seven. By then a few adult teeth are usually through, which lets us see how the jaws and bite are developing while there is plenty of growth still to come.
Most of the children we see need no treatment at all, and that is genuinely good news. Often we simply watch, and invite you back for a relaxed review as the adult teeth arrive. When early treatment does help, it is because acting now makes later treatment simpler, or stops a problem getting worse.
We look for things like a crossbite, a narrow upper jaw, front teeth that stick out, baby teeth that will not make way, missing teeth, or habits such as thumb sucking. These are all easier to guide gently while a child is still growing, often with a plate, an expander or a short course of early braces. Where two phases of treatment are likely, we plan and quote both together from the start, so there are no surprises later. For most children, though, a single round of treatment in the teenage years is all they will ever need.
For teens
The teenage years are the classic window for orthodontics, and for good reason. Somewhere around eleven to fifteen the last adult teeth come through while the jaws are still growing, and we can use that growth to help the bite settle into place.
That often means treatment is a little faster and more comfortable than the same work would be later in life. Crowding, gaps, overbites, underbites, crossbites and impacted canines are all very normal at this age, and all very treatable.
There are two main paths. Braces are the dependable choice for every kind of case, and modern options like LightForce custom braces are far subtler than many parents remember. Clear aligners are nearly invisible and removable, which suits plenty of teenagers, as long as they are worn for around twenty two hours a day. Your specialist will talk through braces and clear aligners honestly and recommend the right fit for your teenager's teeth and lifestyle, from sport and mouthguards to music and everyday routines.
For adults
It is never too late. We treat adults in their twenties through to their sixties and beyond, because teeth can be moved safely at almost any age. What matters is the health of your teeth and gums, not the year you were born.
Adults come to us for all sorts of reasons: a smile they have always wanted to sort out, teeth that have drifted since braces years ago, or straightening ahead of other dental work. Relapse after childhood treatment is one of the most common things we see, and it is very fixable.
The discreet options make it easy to fit treatment around work and daily life. Clear aligners are close to invisible trays that come out for meetings, meals and photos, and most colleagues never notice them. Clear ceramic and LightForce braces are the reliable choice for every kind of case, in a far subtler form than you might remember. Every plan is designed and delivered by a specialist orthodontist, with all records, appointments, retainers and aftercare included, and interest-free payment plans to spread the cost.

What is the youngest age my child should see an orthodontist?
We suggest a first check from around age seven. By then a few adult teeth are usually through, so we can spot anything that might need guiding while there is plenty of growth to work with. Most children need no treatment at that stage, and we simply keep an eye on things as the adult teeth come in.
Is there an oldest age, or am I too old for treatment?
No. It is never too late to straighten your teeth. We treat adults from their twenties through to their sixties and beyond, because teeth can be moved safely at almost any age. What matters is the health of your teeth and gums, not the number of birthdays.
Does my child need a referral before their first visit?
No referral is needed. You can book directly with us for any age, whether it is a first check for your child or treatment for yourself. If your dentist has referred you, bring along any notes or x-rays they have given you.
How do I know when is the right time to start?
For children, around age seven is a sensible time for a first look, and we will tell you honestly whether to start now or wait. For teenagers and adults, the right time is usually whenever you are ready, once the teeth and gums are healthy. If you are not sure, a complimentary Smile Assessment is the easiest way to find out.
Are the teenage years still the best time for braces?
Roughly eleven to fifteen is the classic window, because the jaws are still growing and we can use that growth to help. That said, missing it changes very little. Teeth still move well afterwards, and plenty of our patients start treatment as older teenagers or adults with excellent results.
