It is the first question almost everyone asks us, and it is a fair one: how much do braces actually cost in New Zealand? The honest answer is that it depends on your teeth, not on a fixed price list. Below we explain the real ranges, what moves the price up or down, and exactly how our pricing works so there are no surprises.
What braces and aligners typically cost in New Zealand
There is no set fee for orthodontics in New Zealand. According to the New Zealand Association of Orthodontists, a full course of treatment generally falls in these ranges:
- Traditional metal braces: roughly $3,000 to $13,000 or more
- Ceramic (clear) braces: roughly $3,500 to $13,500 or more
- Clear aligners, including Invisalign and Angel Aligners: roughly $4,000 to $14,000 or more
- Short, limited cosmetic treatment (about six months): roughly $3,500 to $7,000
Those ranges are wide on purpose. The low end covers very simple cases and short treatments, while the top end covers complex cases that take longer. In practice, most full treatments for teens and adults in Auckland land somewhere in the middle, commonly between about $6,000 and $10,000.
Why the price varies so much
Two people can be quoted very different fees for what looks like the same thing. Here is what drives the difference:
- How complex your case is. This is the biggest factor. Mild crowding is quicker and simpler than correcting a significant bite problem or guiding jaw growth.
- How long treatment takes. Most full treatments run around 18 to 24 months. Longer treatment means more appointments and more chair time.
- The type of appliance. Metal braces are usually the most cost effective. Ceramic braces cost a little more for the tooth coloured look. Clear aligners vary by how much movement is needed.
- Who provides your care. A specialist orthodontist and a general dentist are not the same thing, which we explain below.
Braces or clear aligners: which costs more?
People often assume clear aligners are far more expensive than braces. In reality the two overlap a lot, and the right choice depends on your case rather than the price tag. For many people the cost is similar. At your assessment we will tell you honestly which option suits your teeth and why, so you are choosing on results, not guesswork.
Who does your treatment matters
In New Zealand, a general dentist can legally offer braces and aligners without any specialist orthodontic training. A specialist orthodontist, on the other hand, completes a dental degree and then around three years of full time postgraduate training in orthodontics. "Specialist Orthodontist" is a protected title that requires registration with the Dental Council of New Zealand.
Why does this matter for cost? Because getting it right the first time is what keeps treatment affordable. When complex treatment is carried out beyond someone's training, problems can be missed, and correcting them later can mean more time, more money, and in some cases surgery that could have been avoided. A carefully planned course of treatment from a specialist is not about paying more, it is about not paying twice.
Dr Shaz is a specialist orthodontist, dual registered in New Zealand and the United Kingdom, so your treatment is planned and delivered by an orthodontist from start to finish. If you would like a specialist view on a plan you have already been given, we are always happy to offer a second opinion.
What should be included in the price
A quote is only useful if you know what it covers. The NZAO suggests checking whether your fee includes consultations, diagnostic records, your appliances, all adjustment visits, emergency appointments, removal of the appliances, and your retainers, including replacements. Some clinics bill several of these separately, which is how a low headline price can grow.
Our fees are genuinely all inclusive and include GST. That means your quote covers your records, appliances, appointments, retainers and aftercare, with no surprise invoices along the way.
How you pay for braces in New Zealand
Very few people pay for orthodontics in one go, and you do not need to. Most Auckland practices, including ours, spread the cost over your treatment with an interest free payment plan, usually a deposit followed by regular weekly or monthly payments. At Milk, our plans are interest free and designed around your budget, so treatment is manageable rather than daunting.
Is orthodontics funded in New Zealand?
For most people, orthodontics is not publicly funded. Free dental care for under 18s does not include braces or aligners. There are a few exceptions worth knowing about:
- Public hospital funding may be available for severe medical or congenital cases, such as cleft lip and palate or significant jaw discrepancies, assessed case by case.
- ACC may help where orthodontic work is directly needed because of an accident, with prior approval.
- Private health insurance sometimes includes a small capped orthodontic benefit, often for dependent children and usually with a waiting period. It is worth checking your own policy, as this is rarely full cover.
- Wish For A Smile, a charitable trust run through the NZAO, provides free treatment to some young New Zealanders whose families cannot afford care.
How our pricing works, step by step
We keep it simple and transparent, and all of our fees include GST.
- Your first step is a complimentary Smile Assessment. It is free, takes about 20 minutes in clinic or on Zoom, and there is no obligation or referral needed.
- A full diagnostic work up with your written treatment plan and exact quote is $390. You can book this directly if you already know you want to get going, and you will know the full cost before any treatment begins.
As a guide, our complete, all inclusive treatment fees are:
- Simple or cosmetic alignment (mild crowding, small gaps, front teeth tidy ups): from $7,900, interest free from about $60 a week.
- Comprehensive specialist treatment (correcting the bite, crowding, teeth that stick out or are stuck under the gum, or cases needing jaw surgery): from $9,900. Most full treatments land around $10,400, with more complex cases quoted individually up to about $12,900.
- Children's early treatment: an early Phase 1 on its own starts from $4,500, and a combined Phase 1 and Phase 2 plan is $11,900 to $12,500, quoted together from the start so there are no surprises later.
Every fee is genuinely all inclusive: diagnostic records, 3D scans, all appliances, every appointment and adjustment, progress reviews, removal, retainers and aftercare, with no separate invoices along the way. To make it manageable we offer an in house interest free plan, a deposit followed by equal monthly payments by direct debit. You can save $500 by paying in full, and we offer a family discount when more than one family member is in treatment. Your exact figure is always confirmed in writing after your specialist examination.
You can see the full breakdown on our prices page, read about braces and your options, or learn about clear aligners. For younger patients, our children's orthodontics page explains early treatment.
Frequently asked questions
How much do braces cost in NZ?
There is no set national fee, and a full course commonly ranges from a few thousand dollars to well over ten thousand depending on your case. As a guide, our own complete, all inclusive treatment starts from $7,900 for simple cases and from $9,900 for comprehensive specialist care, with most full treatments around $10,400. Your exact figure is confirmed in writing after a specialist examination.
Do you offer payment plans?
Yes. We spread the cost over your treatment with an interest free weekly plan, so you are not paying it all at once.
Is Invisalign more expensive than braces?
Not necessarily. Braces and clear aligners overlap in price, and the best choice depends on your case rather than the cost. We will advise you honestly at your assessment.
Are retainers included in the price?
Yes. Our fees are all inclusive, which covers your retainers and aftercare, not just the active treatment.
Can I get braces for free in New Zealand?
Routine orthodontics is not publicly funded, including for children. Limited exceptions exist for severe medical cases through the public hospital system, for accident related work through ACC, and through the Wish For A Smile charity.
Does health insurance cover orthodontics?
Some policies include a small capped orthodontic benefit, often for children and usually with a waiting period. It is rarely full cover, so check your specific policy.
Do I need a referral?
No. You can book a complimentary Smile Assessment with us directly.
Can a dentist do braces instead of a specialist orthodontist?
A general dentist can legally offer braces, but a specialist orthodontist has around three extra years of training focused only on this. For anything beyond simple cases, that expertise helps get the result right the first time.
