What braces cost in New Zealand in 2026

Published NZ price guides and our own fees, side by side. Ranges are what clinics around the country advertise; the Milk figures are what you actually pay, with everything included.

Metal braces

Around $6,000 to $9,000 across NZ, about $6,500 to $10,000 in Auckland. Often quoted without retainers or records.

Ceramic clear braces

Around $7,000 to $10,000 across NZ. Same mechanics as metal, tooth-coloured brackets, usually a small premium.

Clear aligners

Around $6,500 to $9,500 for specialist aligners across NZ. Online kits cost less because nobody is supervising them.

Ranges from published New Zealand price guides in 2026. They are a guide to the market, not a quote.

What Milk charges

All-inclusive, quoted in writing, the same at Newmarket and Albany.

Simple or cosmetic treatment from $7,900
Comprehensive specialist treatment from $9,900, most cases around $10,400
The most complex cases up to $12,900
Children's early treatment from $4,500
New Patient Consultation, written plan and exact quote $390
Interest-free in-house plans, roughly $60 to $76 a week

Every fee includes records, appliances, every appointment, retainers and aftercare. Full pricing, or the Auckland cost guide with worked examples.

What moves the price

Four things decide where a case sits in the range. None of them is the brand of bracket.

How much has to move

Mild crowding or a small gap sits at the simple end. Bite correction, rotations and jaw relationships sit in comprehensive.

Who plans it

A specialist orthodontist has around three extra years of full-time training. Fees are similar to a general dentist offering braces, the result is not.

What is included

Records, repairs, retainers and aftercare are frequent extras. Ask for the total before you compare two quotes.

How long it runs

Twelve to twenty-four months is usual for comprehensive treatment. Longer cases carry more visits and more appliances.

Ways to make it affordable

1

Free first step

A free 20 minute Smile Assessment in clinic, or photos from your phone. You get a cost guide before you spend anything.

2

A deposit, then monthly

Around $2,200 to start, flexible, then equal monthly direct debits across the treatment. No interest, no finance company.

3

Discounts that add up

$500 off if you pay comprehensive treatment in full. $200 off the second family member and $300 off each one after.

4

Insurance where it applies

Milk is a Southern Cross Affiliated Provider. Some policies carry an orthodontic benefit; check yours before the consultation.

How much are braces in NZ?

Most people in New Zealand pay between about $6,000 and $12,000 for a full course of braces or clear aligners, with Auckland in the upper half of that range. At Milk the fee is all-inclusive: from $7,900 for simple or cosmetic cases, from $9,900 for comprehensive specialist treatment, most cases around $10,400, and up to $12,900 for the most complex.

Why do prices vary so much between clinics?

Three things: how much of the fee is really included (records, retainers and aftercare are often extras elsewhere), who plans the case (a specialist orthodontist or a general dentist), and how complex the teeth are. A low headline number with extras added later can cost more than an all-inclusive fee.

Are braces cheaper outside Auckland?

Usually a little. Published NZ price guides put most regions at about $6,000 to $9,000 for metal braces and Auckland at about $6,500 to $10,000, because overheads are higher. The gap is smaller than it looks once you compare what is included, and treatment needs eight to fourteen visits, so distance costs time too.

How much are braces for a child or teenager in NZ?

Children's early treatment, a short first phase around age seven to ten, is from $4,500. Comprehensive treatment for a teenager is from $9,900, most around $10,400. Basic dental care is free until 18 in New Zealand, but orthodontics is not part of it.

Are clear aligners cheaper than braces?

No. Braces and specialist clear aligners are priced by the complexity of the case, not the appliance, so a simple case costs the same either way and a complex one does too. Online aligner kits are cheaper because there is no specialist, no records and no supervision, which is why we do not recommend them.

What does all-inclusive mean at Milk?

One written fee that covers records, x-rays and 3D scans, the appliances, every appointment, repairs, retainers at the end and the aftercare checks. The only separate charge is the $390 New Patient Consultation with Dr Shaz, where the plan and the exact quote are produced.

How much are braces per week?

On our in-house interest-free plan, treatment works out at roughly $60 to $76 a week depending on the plan length and the case. A deposit of around $2,200 gets you started, and the balance is spread across the treatment by direct debit with no interest and no finance company.

Is there any funding for braces in NZ?

Very little. Public hospital orthodontics is limited to the most severe conditions, Work and Income dental grants rarely cover braces, and only some health insurance policies carry an orthodontic benefit. Milk is a Southern Cross Affiliated Provider. See our funding page for the full picture.

How do I find out what my own child's braces would cost?

Book a free 20 minute Smile Assessment in clinic, or send a few photos from your phone for a free online one. You get a cost guide first. The exact fee comes with the written plan at the $390 New Patient Consultation, and nothing is decided on the day.
