Braces for Teens: What to Expect

Step 1: The first look, which is free

Everything starts with a free 20 minute Smile Assessment, in the clinic or over Zoom. No referral needed. We look at your teen's smile, explain what we see in plain language, and tell you honestly whether now is the right time to start. Deciding between braces and aligners? Step 2: Records and the plan

If you decide to go ahead, a full diagnostic work-up is $390: photos, X-rays and a specialist examination, followed by a written treatment plan and an exact quote. Our fees are all-inclusive of records, appliances, appointments, retainers and aftercare, so the number you see is the number you pay.

Step 3: Fitting day

Fitting braces takes around an hour and does not hurt. Teeth usually feel tender for a few days afterwards, which soft foods and patience sort out. Most teens are back at school the same day.

Living with braces

School, sport and music all carry on. A custom-fit mouthguard keeps sport safe, instruments settle within days, and a small care kit in the school bag handles cleaning after lunch. Colour bands are there if your teen wants them, and subtle options if they do not. Adjustments every 6 to 10 weeks

We see your teen roughly every 6 to 10 weeks to keep everything moving to plan, and we work around school hours where we can. Teeth can feel tight for a day or two after each visit, then settle.

Braces off, retainers on

What it costs

Comprehensive specialist treatment starts from $9,900 with most cases around $10,400, all-inclusive and including GST. Interest-free in-house plans work out around $60 to $76 a week, there is $500 off if paid in full, and family discounts apply for siblings. Full detail on our pricing page.

Helping your teen get the best from their braces

The steps above cover the clinical journey. The day to day success of teen treatment often comes down to a few simple habits at home, and a bit of support from you.

Staying consistent, especially with aligners

Braces work around the clock on their own, which suits a busy teenager well. Aligners ask more: they only work while they are being worn, ideally around 22 hours a day, coming out just to eat and clean. For some teens that responsibility is empowering, for others braces are the more realistic choice. It is an honest conversation worth having together before you decide, because the best appliance is the one your teen will actually stick with.

Keeping teeth clean between classes

The one habit that matters most during treatment is cleaning. Food catches around brackets and wires, and skipped cleaning is what leaves marks on the teeth once the braces come off. A small kit in the school bag makes it easy: a travel toothbrush, interdental brushes to get around the wires, and a water bottle for a quick rinse after lunch. A thorough clean morning and night at home does the heavy lifting, and a couple of minutes after meals keeps things on track.

Handling the small hiccups at home

Little things crop up, and most are easily managed. If a wire is poking, a dab of orthodontic wax over the end usually settles it until we can see your teen. If a bracket comes loose but is still attached to the wire, leave it in place, cover it with wax if it is rubbing, and give us a call. Tenderness after an adjustment responds well to soft foods and time. Your role as a parent

Gentle reminders, help keeping appointments, and a bit of encouragement on the tender days all make a real difference, particularly in the first few weeks and with aligner wear. Treatment usually runs over many months, and steady support keeps it on schedule.
