Common Orthodontic Myths Debunked

by Dr Shaz MacAvoy, Specialist Orthodontist

Braces are only for kids, aligners work for everyone, treatment costs the earth. Orthodontics attracts myths. Here are the ones we hear most, and the honest truth behind each, from the specialist team at Milk Orthodontics.

Reviewed and updated by the Milk Orthodontics specialist team, July 2026.

Myth 1: Braces are only for kids and teenagers

Teeth move at any age. A meaningful share of our patients are adults in their 30s, 40s, 50s and beyond, and adults now have more discreet options than ever, from ceramic braces to clear aligners. If you have been putting it off since high school, you are exactly who we treat every week. See what is possible in our real results gallery.

Myth 2: Straight teeth are purely cosmetic

The confidence boost is real, but it is not the whole story. Well aligned teeth are easier to clean, wear more evenly, and put less strain on gums and jaw joints. Orthodontics is health care that happens to look wonderful when it is done.

Myth 3: Orthodontic treatment is only for the wealthy

At Milk Orthodontics, simple cosmetic treatment starts from $7,900 and comprehensive specialist treatment from $9,900, all-inclusive of records, appliances, appointments, retainers and aftercare. Our in-house interest-free plans work out around $60 to $76 a week, there is $500 off if paid in full, and family discounts apply. See our honest pricing for the full picture.

Myth 4: Braces mean giving up your favourite foods

The genuine no-go list is short: very hard and very sticky things. Almost everything else carries on as normal, sometimes cut into smaller pieces. Aligner patients simply take their trays out to eat.

Myth 5: Braces are always big, metal and obvious

Modern braces are smaller and more comfortable than the ones parents remember, and clear ceramic options blend with your teeth. We also offer LightForce 3D-printed custom braces, made to fit each tooth exactly, and clear aligners that most people never notice.

Myth 6: Anyone who offers braces is an orthodontist

All orthodontists are dentists, but most dentists are not orthodontists. Specialist orthodontists complete around three extra years of university training focused entirely on teeth, bites and jaw growth. If you have a plan from elsewhere and something feels off, we are happy to give a second opinion.

Myth 7: Clear aligners work for everyone, or for no one

Both extremes are wrong. In the right case, worn around 22 hours a day, aligners produce beautiful results. In the wrong case, or worn casually, they disappoint. The risky version is mail order aligners with no specialist supervision, which we covered honestly in our post on TikTok teeth trends.

Myth 8: Once treatment ends, teeth stay straight forever

Teeth keep trying to move for the rest of your life, which is why retention matters as much as treatment. At Milk your retainers and aftercare are included in the fee. Our guide to teeth retainers covers it all.

Myth 9: You need a referral to see an orthodontist

You can book directly with us, no referral needed. The first step is a free 20 minute Smile Assessment, in the clinic or over Zoom, and you will leave with an honest answer either way.
