Making treatment easy day to day

A great coordinator smooths the journey, and a few practical habits smooth the everyday. Here is how treatment actually fits into normal life, so there are fewer surprises once you begin.

The appointment rhythm

Orthodontics is a series of short, regular visits rather than a few long ones. After your braces or aligners are fitted, you will usually come in every several weeks for a quick check and adjustment. Most of these visits are brief. Knowing the rhythm in advance makes it easy to plan around school, work and holidays, and we do our best to find times that suit. If you are ever running behind or need to move an appointment, a quick call to (09) 520 1880 is all it takes.

Eating with braces or aligners

You do not have to give up much, but a few adjustments protect your treatment. With braces, the two things to avoid are very hard foods and very sticky ones, which can loosen a bracket or bend a wire. Cutting firm foods like apples and carrots into smaller pieces, and being sensible with crusty bread, goes a long way. For the first day or two after each adjustment, softer foods are kinder while teeth feel tender. With aligners it is simpler still: you take them out to eat and drink anything other than water, then clean your teeth and pop them back in.

Your cleaning kit

Keeping teeth clean during treatment is easier with the right small tools to hand. A soft toothbrush, interdental brushes to reach around brackets and wires, floss or floss threaders, and a little travel kit for your bag or locker all help. Aligner wearers benefit from a spare case and a soft brush for the trays. A couple of minutes after meals keeps everything fresh and helps avoid marks on the teeth once treatment finishes.

Getting through the first week

The first week is the one people remember, and it is very manageable when you know what to expect. Teeth commonly feel tender for a few days as they begin to move, and the inside of your lips and cheeks may need a little time to toughen up against new braces. Soft foods, plenty of water, and orthodontic wax smoothed over any spot that rubs make all the difference. Any tenderness usually eases within several days, and by the second week most people barely notice their braces are there.

Sport and music

Both carry on. If you play contact sport, a mouthguard is essential to protect your lips and your braces, and we can advise on the right kind. For musicians, wind and brass instruments feel a little different at first while your lips adjust to the braces, but the vast majority of players settle within a week or two and are soon playing exactly as before. A little wax helps in those early days.

None of this is complicated once you are in the swing of it, and your treatment coordinator is there whenever a question comes up. If you are still weighing up your options, you can explore braces and clear aligners, or book a complimentary Smile Assessment to talk it through. No referral is needed, and we can usually see new patients within three weeks.
