Every orthodontist is a dentist who then completed about three more years of full-time university training in orthodontics and registered as a specialist with the Dental Council of New Zealand. A general dentist can legally fit braces or aligners, but only a registered specialist has that training. It is the first thing to check, and the easiest: search the practitioner on the Dental Council register and look for the orthodontic specialist scope.

How do I check whether an orthodontist is a registered specialist?
Search the practitioner's name on the Dental Council of New Zealand's public register (dcnz.org.nz). A specialist orthodontist is registered in the orthodontic specialist scope of practice, in addition to general dental registration. If the person offering braces or aligners is registered only as a general dentist, they are not an orthodontist.
