Why the cheap option costs more
A retainer only works if it fits exactly. Three ways the saving disappears.
Made to drifted teeth
If teeth have already moved, a retainer made to them locks the drift in. A specialist checks first.
A fit nobody checked
Home impressions distort. A retainer that rocks or gaps lets the front teeth move within weeks.
Re-treatment
Once teeth have relapsed, the fix is treatment again, not a retainer. That is the real cost of a $150 saving.

Are retainers included in the cost of braces at Milk?
Yes. Retainers at the end of treatment and the aftercare checks are part of the all-inclusive fee. Nothing is added when the braces come off.
How much is a replacement retainer if I lost mine?
It depends on the type and whether we still hold a recent scan of the teeth. The price is confirmed before anything is made, and it is a small fraction of orthodontic treatment. Book promptly: teeth drift most in the first year after treatment.
Can I get a retainer if I had braces somewhere else?
Yes. We make replacement retainers for everyone, including people treated at another clinic or overseas, or whose orthodontist has retired. Bring what is left of the old retainer if you have it.
Removable or bonded, which is cheaper?
A clear removable retainer is usually cheaper to make. A bonded wire costs more to fit because it is placed and checked in the chair, but it works around the clock without anyone remembering it. Many people have both: a wire behind the lower front teeth and a clear retainer at night.
Why not buy a retainer online?
An online retainer is made from a home impression with nobody checking the fit or the bite. A retainer that does not fit exactly lets teeth move, and a retainer made to teeth that have already drifted locks in the drift. The saving is small and the risk is the whole result.
How long do retainers last?
A clear removable retainer typically lasts a year or two with night wear before it clouds or cracks. A bonded wire can last many years but should be checked. Plan on retainers for life, worn at night, whatever the age.
Do I need to see an orthodontist for a replacement, or will a dentist do?
Either can make one. A specialist orthodontist checks whether the teeth have moved since treatment before making the retainer, and can re-bond a fixed wire on the spot. If anything has drifted, we say so and tell you the options honestly.
